Keep your vegtables safe from pesticides

Dr. OZ did a show on pesticides on vegtables.  It was shocking to learn how that they are loaded with up to as many as 60 different pesticides on one piece of fruit or vegtables.  The worst? Strawberrys.  But don't give up on fresh fruits and vegtables, he gave a recipe for a non-toxic vegtable wash you make make cheaply and easily:

Ingredients:
1 cup water
1 cup distilled white vinegar
1/2 of a lemon juice

Pour all ingredients in a new clean spray bottle, mix well.

For things like spinach, or strawberries, you can soak them for about 1/2 hour in the solution to get the pesticides to rinse off.

Back Help

For a couple of weeks, I've been dealing with a pinched sciatic nerve, which is the main nerve that runs from your back and a branch for each leg.  I was experiencing everything from a dull ache in the right side of my butt to sharp pain.  I don't have the money to go see a chiropractor.  However, I do have a Spine Worx.  I didn't hold much hope for it helping me with THIS big of a problem.  But, necessity is the mother of invention (or at least coming up with alternatives).  So I decided to lie on it 20 minutes every day and see what happens.  Sure enough, every day it was getting better until it's almost gone now.  It's amazing what a simple device (a molded piece of plastic) can do.  Although I wouldn't consider it a replacement for the chiropractor, it can do in a pinch (yes, pun intended!).

Oven: Green and Clean

I have a recipe for green oven cleaner. Since I've switched over to the wood cook stove until spring, it is time to clean my electric roaster oven. I was suprized how effective this recipe was.

Ingredients:
Baking soda, Water, spray bottle, sponge
Directions:
Sprinkle about a quarter inch layer of baking soda all over the bottom of the oven. Using a clean spray bottle filled with water, spray the baking soda until damp but not wet. Wet the soda a couple of times throughout the day and let sit overnight. Wipe clean the next day with a sponge.

As with any oven cleaner, I had a few stubborn spots with lots of baked on stuff. The baking soda makes a mild abrasive with got most of the remaining stuff off. However, I still have a couple of stubborn spots which I covered up with the baking soda paste to sit another day.

Auyervedic Wrinkle Fighter

I've always been attracted to the exotic, the unusual and the ancient.  Now one of my favorite spices is known to fight wrinkles: Curry or Tumeric .  For those of you who love Indian food (me!) this is great news.  It has been touted to be more effective than retinol and alpha-hydroxy acids in smoothing out wrinkles.  However, it still hasn't been figured out how to deal with the odor issue.  Not everyone wants to smell like a street vendor in New Delhi.  This article tells more about it.

Sorry I missed a couple of days--Rice Veil

Hi everyone, sorry I missed a couple of days, hope you all had a nice weekend.  Today's subject is rice veil.  Used like loose powder, it makes a nice translucent matte finish and is featherweight.  I use mine over my loose mineral foundation and then add blush on top.  I find it keeps my face looking fresh all day long without feeling weighted down.

I used the lemons

A couple of days ago I posted about all the different uses for lemons.  The research I did for the post prompted me to get some lemons since they had so many uses.  I got a half-dozen lemons and ended up using them in a way I hadn't planned.  Since I learned that lemons cut grease, I ended up using them to clean up my kitchen stove.  You might be wondering "Don't you always clean your stove? What's the big deal?"  Well my kitchen stove is circa 1930's Monarch wood stove.  During the summer, I use a propane hotplate and an electric roaster.  Since fall came early, our annual routine of cleaning out the kitchen stove for it's seasonal inagural use came yesterday.  However, since I always put the propane hotplate on top of the stove for summer, the surface was caked with grease and food particles from a season of cooking.  This posed a special problem though.  Cleaning the surface was not a matter of just spraying with 409 and wiping it clean because as soon as the stove heated up, there would be fumes from whatever I cleaned it with.

Ah, the lemons!  After scraping up the worst of it, I squeezed the lemon juice all over the surface.  The lemon juice cut the grease after must squirting an wiping.  And the kitchen smelled wonderful.  And yes, BTW it was nice to have my stove back.

Coconut Oil: A beauty must

One of my favourite beauty staples is coconut oil.  It makes a great lightweight moisturizer for the skin, a great hair balm, lip balm, and massage oil..  I primarily use it for my hair since my hair is very long and tends to tangle.  Coconut oil tends to turn solid at room temperature but it'll melt at body temperature.  Although it might seem like it costs a bit, a little goes a long way and it is a great value.

Did you know that lemons can lighten age spots?

Use a small piece of lemon and apply it to the age spot.  Leave it on for about a hour.  You can also soften elbows by cutting a lemon in half, sprinkling baking soda on each half and rubbing the lemon halves on your elbows as if juicing the lemons.  This article lists 22 uses for lemons.

Another citrus benefit is grapefruit seed extract.  I keep a bottle of GSE concentrate around to treat sinus infections and oral thrush.  There are many uses for this versatile product such as: fighting candida, chronic fatigue, colds, fungal infections and in cleaning and laundry applications.

Great Colours for Fall

I've picked out 3 of my favorite loose mineral eyeshadow colours for fall:

3) Copper
They can be applied wet or dry, wet gives more intense colour. I put the Beach on the upper brow, urban moss on lid and copper in the crease.

Product Review: Natureworks Calendula Cream

I am allergic to napweed (a thistle like noxious weed that grows in my area) and when I walk through it, I end up with a rash a few hours later. What treats my rash well is Natureworks Calendula Cream. It has a rich, creamy texture and a light yellow colour. If you like the smell of calendula (marigolds) it smells heavenly! (At least I think so). it also really moisturizes well. Since most of the time it's my calfs that get the rash, that's where I apply it. Since my calfs are dry anyway, I get the extra benefits of moisturization.

Product Review: Aveda Foot Relief

I got a sample tube of Aveda Foot Relief. I tried it out today and found it does exactly what it was supposed to do. It is very rich and started gently exfoliating me feet as I was applying it. It has peppermint in it but it's not overpowering. Like everything Aveda makes, it is rich in essential oils and botanicals.

Salt: Natures Most Versatile Mineral

Salt, a very common mineral in modern life. In the past, it was very precious, henceforth the old adage "Any man worth his salt...". However, there is a reason it's been so precious. In the past, it had been used to flavor and preserve food. But there are so many other uses for salt. This article lists 47 of them.

I've had sinus problems for years. I regularly rinse my sinuses out using a salt water solution. A neti pot is an ancient pot shaped kind of like Alladin's Lamp which is designed for rinsing sinuses.

Solay Wellness has a variety of Neti Pots and Himalayan salts available.
